10 Questions to ask to kickoff a great product

At the start of each project, I always try to answer the following 10 questions. This helps me to focus on what is important to make the project successful.

1. What is the product offering?
An offering is more than the product itself and includes elements that represent additional value to your customers, such as availability, convenient delivery, technical support or quality of service.

2. What are the business goals?
Goals are used to help a business grow and achieve its objectives.

3. Who are we building it for?
Understanding and knowing who your user/customer is vital to building a great product. Create personas to help everyone on the team to understand the user.

4. What are the customer’s needs?
Why do they want to use the product, what problem are we solving for them.

5. Who are our competitors?
Doing research on what other companies are doing. Knowing who your competitors are and what they’re doing will ensure that we stay on trend.

6. What is the product value?
What value will the user/customer get by using your product? It’s important to focus on value and not on features. Ask “What is the user getting out of it?”

7. What makes your product different?
Why would the user/customer use your product and not your competitor? What is your unique value proposition?

8. What are the limitations?
Knowing your limitations from the start will help you to make technical decisions and will save you time in the long term.

9. How will it be measured?
Set out metrics to measure to have an indication of the success of the product.

10. How do you measure customer satisfaction?
Ultimately we build products for our users/customers. They should enjoy using it, otherwise, they might start looking for an alternative.
